Glendale, Arizona – The Kansas City Chiefs led by head coach Andy Reid and quarterback Patrick Mahomes withstood an impressive game by Jalen Hurts and the defense of the Philadelphia Eagles to win their third super bowl in franchise history last Sunday night.

Mahomes was resilient and fought through injury to outmaneuver one of the best defensive teams in the NFL this past season.  Philadelphia made some mistakes, but smart plays, no turnovers and no pass interceptions paved the way for the Kansas City in the 38-35 victory at Super Bowl LVII.

“It’s hard it hasn’t even sunk in I don’t even think yet,” said Mahomes about what this Super Bowl win means to him. “I appreciate it because of the failures. I mean the failure of losing a Super Bowl and losing the AFC championship game (last year to Cincinnati) gives you a greater appreciation to be standing here as a champion.”

Chiefs Storm Back Beat Eagles Mahomes MVP

The 27-year-old Mahomes completed 21 of 27 passes for 182 yards, earned a 131.8 passer rating, threw three touch downs and zero interceptions and was named the Most Valuable Player of the game. Mahomes also received the Associated Press 2022 NFL MVP award Thursday night.

Hurts completed 27 of 38 passes for 304 yards, had a 103.4 rating, threw one touchdown and rushed for three touchdowns, and had zero interceptions Sunday night. “I will say I’m so proud of this team for everything that we’ve been able to overcome,” Hurts said following the game.

“I mean, if there was any doubters left there shouldn’t be now, Mahomes said about Hurts performance. “I mean, even whenever we got all the momentum in that game, and we went up eight points in the fourth quarter for him to respond and move his team down the football field and run in himself in a two-point conversion, it was a special performance by him.”

Hurts was spectacular, but the Chiefs bounced back each time with successful plays and defense. Kansas City defense had 64 total tackles and assists, two sacks and one forced fumble. The Eagles defense were unable to get to Mahomes. They had 45 tackles and assists, zero sacks and zero forced fumbles.

Philadelphia scored first as Hurts ran up the middle for a touchdown. Mahomes passed to tight end Travis Kelce and he did the “Stanky Leg” in the end zone after scoring a touchdown. The teams were tied at seven going into the second quarter. Hurts connected with A.J. Brown for a touchdown within the first minute of the second quarter.

Hurts fumbled on the Eagles next possession and the Chiefs took advantage as linebacker Nick Bolton recovered the fumble and ran the ball back for a touchdown. Hurts ran 4 yards for another touchdown with 2:20 left before halftime. Elliott added a 36 yard field goal about four seconds before half time.

The Chiefs had ball four times in the second half of the game and scored 24 points. Butker missed a field goal in the first quarter, but redeemed himself at the end of the game which gave Kansas city the win after a defensive holding call on Eagles cornerback James Bradberry in the last few minutes of the game.

“I don’t have to motivate these guys too much,” Coach Reid said about his message to the players at halftime.  “They’re very motivated to do well, and we were down by ten points so it’s not that much. With the way our defense plays in shutting people down and the way our offense plays by scoring points so it’s just a matter of straightening out a couple things.”

The Kansas City Chiefs returned home for their parade on Wednesday.
