Al Sharpton Says Prominent Black Figures Like Diddy and Tyler Perry Are Targets for Federal Scrutiny
*Rev. Al Sharpton is weighing in on the scrutiny facing high-profile Black men, saying there’s a historical pattern of wealthy, famous African Americans being targeted by federal authorities. The civil rights leader didn’t mince words when asked about ongoing legal issues surrounding Sean “Diddy” Combs and Tyler Perry.
“For as long as this country has been around,” Sharpton told TMZ, “wealthy, prominent Black folks have been targeted … because the feds see them as easy targets.”
Sharpton acknowledged the seriousness of the charges facing both men — Combs currently stands trial in a sweeping federal sex-trafficking case, and Perry is battling a $260 million civil lawsuit alleging sexual assault and workplace harassment — but emphasized the larger racial context.
“Don’t get it twisted,” he said. “Diddy and Tyler shouldn’t be blindly defended just because they are Black.” Still, Sharpton insisted, “their race puts a target on their backs.”
Combs’ criminal trial in the Southern District of New York, which began in May, has been defined by weeks of graphic and emotional testimony. Witnesses have included former romantic partners and music industry peers, while prosecutors introduced video footage, financial records, and text exchanges to support charges of racketeering, sex trafficking, and coercion. The defense chose not to call any witnesses, instead highlighting messages between Combs and alleged victim Cassie Ventura Fine in an effort to shift the narrative.
Meanwhile, Perry has firmly denied allegations made by actor Derek Dixon, who appeared in Perry’s show “The Oval.” Dixon claims he was subjected to a long campaign of harassment and retaliation. Perry’s attorney, Matthew Boyd, called the lawsuit “a scam,” asserting that “Tyler will not be shaken down.”
Asked about the broader implications, Sharpton pointed to Juneteenth and the increased awareness of racial justice as reasons the public should stay alert to potential bias in high-profile legal battles. “People need to look at the evidence,” he said, “but also look at the pattern.”
